The Education and Awareness Unit is a unit of its own under the umbrella of the Resource Management Unit. The establishment of this Unit is clearly defined on the Environment Management Act 2005 section 13 sub sections 3(c).
Fiji’s ability to meet environment threats at home and abroad is in extricable linked with the priority it places on environmental education/awareness programs. Environmental issues are frequently complex and contested. Without a firm, educated basis of knowledge and understand, progress on environmental issues becomes haphazard, uncertain and unlikely.
It has facilitated numerous activities that involve dishing out information to the general public, other government counterparts, non-governmental organization and various other stakeholders. Information that was usually highlighted includes environmental issues that Fiji is currently facing and will probably face in the near future. Activities also include school visits, community awareness, conducting community workshop and clean up campaigns.
All these activities and information exchange will be continued and closely monitored by the unit together with the assistance from the various units in the department in order to maintain and improve environment sustainability in Fiji.
