World Environment Day is an annual event that is aimed at being the biggest celebrated global day for positive environment action. This is celebrated on the 5th of June annually.
World Environment Day is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and the public action. This is the day the United Nation Conference on the human Environment began, and is an initiative by the United Nation General Assembly.
Fiji is one of the countries in the world that participates in the celebration of this important event. This year’s world environment day eventually falls on a Sunday; therefore the department of environment had decided to have a church service to commemorate this important day. This was also an opportunity for us to tap into the religious context of environmental awareness. Since this is the first time for us to tap into the religious context, we considered this might be the missing link that we have left to uncover.
The national theme for this year’s world environment day national celebration is “My Fiji – My web of Life”. This is the theme that the department will depict throughout the year for its national campaign that will be held throughout Fiji. The theme “My Fiji – My web of Life” significantly portrays the link between humans and the natural environment that surrounds him. All living being on earth are link together in the web of life, if a strand is broken it is felt by the entire web and all are affected. The Sunday service for commemorating world environment day was based on a theme “Mankind – Earth stewards and Guardians”. The theme was actually put together by the environment day committee which consists of a rep from all the denomination in the country, and the church service aimed to send out messages based on the responsibility that God has given us human and that is to be responsible guardians of the earth.
