There is a growing recognition that biological diversity is a global asset of tremendous value to present and future generations. However increase in developments and other human activities pose a great threat to biodiversity around the globe. In response to the threat faced by our biological resources, the Convention on Biological Diversity was initiated. Work on the Convention culminated in 1992 and the convention was opened for signing in the same year. Then the Convention entered in to force on 29th December, 1993.
The Convention on Biological Diversity was inspired by the world community’s growing commitment to sustainable development. It represents a dramatic step forward in the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
World Biodiversity Day is usually celebrated on May 22nd every year.
Fiji signed the Convention during the earth summit held in Rio De Janeiro in 1992 and was ratified in 1993. As part of the obligation under the Convention, Fiji produced the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. This is in line with the requirements of Article 6 of the CBD.
